a simple way to reduce stress and work through difficult feelings
Are emotions controlling your life? You most likely aren’t alone. Many people are using ineffective ways to manage the daily stress of life and living.
Have you ever felt so overwhelmed that you couldn’t even identify your feelings? How did you make yourself feel better? Perhaps you called a friend to talk about it or played your favorite song to distract your mind. Or, maybe out of despair, you reached out for something only to regret it later.
These frequently chosen responses are only temporary bandages which cause the feelings of sadness, anger, or anxiety to come back even stronger next time.
Consider the following information when relating to your emotions:
Research shows there are more neural pathways connecting the emotional brain to the thinking brain than the thinking brain to the emotional brain. What does this mean? Simply put, it means it is very difficult to calm your emotions with thoughts. While you are telling yourself to relax and let it go, your emotional brain is putting your body in survival mode which sends messages of fear, worry and pressure.
Emotions are energy in motion. Emotional energy in itself is neutral. It is your thinking brain that gives it a label and meaning. You may call it anger, joy, sadness or fear. Recognizing and acknowledging emotions as energy gives you the platform to successfully manage uncomfortable emotions without making them solid, therefore preventing did-ease in your body. When you truly know emotions are fluid, you’re able to feel and release them instead of suppressing, judging and ignoring them.
You use energy to move energy. Therefore, the breath is a key component to move emotions or energy through your body. Conscious breathing immediately connects your mind with your body, allowing for identification and release of thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Next time you are feeling a rush of emotions, take some time to connect with your body and breath. Ask yourself;”¨
• What do I exactly feel?
• Can I put a name on that emotion? (anger, sadness, etc.)
• Where do I experience the sensation in my body?
Then, breathe consciously, allowing the energy to build and move like a wave through the body, down into the Earth.
While there are dozens of breathing techniques, conscious connected breathing is very effective in purifying your emotional body. This breathing technique establishes a body-mind connection, increases awareness of feelings, and gives the body a space to ride the waves of sensations as it releases from the body.
Conscious breathing benefits include:
• Regained homeostasis (calmness)
• Released emotional, physical, and mental stress
• Increased self esteem
• Clarity of mind
The more you practice mindfulness with your emotions, the more present you will become for the energies of peace, love and ease.
